Margarita's - Pondicherry
MARGARITA'S
We decide to
try the new Mexican restaurant just open in Pondicherry.
When we
arrive, we were pleasantly surprised by discovering the ambience with a red
colored wall and multicolour lamps on the ceiling that gave a hot but at the
same time, intimate atmosphere. Behind the counter, the barman was busy to
prepare some mock tails in the same style of Mexico, like Margarita’s, Pina
Colada and Mojito, but without alcohol…at the end was just a fancy way to drink
lime soda or coconut.
The waiter
approaches us with the menu’ and we start to read about the speciality offered
by the restaurant. There are a lot of dishes to choose from like Burritos,
Enchiladas, Nachos, Fajitas and the options are vegetarian, lamb, chicken or
sea food. Unfortunately the restaurant doesn’t serve beef and for a Mexican
place is really a disappointment. Anyway we place the order, starting with
nachos and Guacamole: the sauce was surely green like the avocado but the
seasoning was absent and no trace of lime or chilli like the original recipe.
Also the nachos
with sea food where just covered with some tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese
and heat in the microwave, with the result that the cheese becomes hard
immediately and the sea food were really less.
The Burritos
that we tried where lamb and chicken and also here we ask ourselves: where is
the Mexican taste? We expected bold flavours ,rich sauces, caramelized onions
on the side, chilli sauce, red beans to dig in and instead we had only a
sherred boiled chicken wrapped in a worm flat bread, with a little sauce on the
top and again mozzarella that don’t really belong to Mexico.
Then we
decide to ask for the Finger Fish, just for having something more to eat but
was a really bad decision. The fish was Basa, that absolutely did not smell fresh (also because it is a frozen
fish) coated with a bread crumb mixture that was impossible to eat.
Tiramisu’
for dessert…in a Mexican restaurant?
OK, maybe
will be a good way to finish a disappointed dinned but wasn’t like that: no
taste of coffee, no mascarpone or any sort or sweet cream cheese, just some fresh
cream that taste very eggy and a sprinkle
of cocoa powder on top.
The staff
was very gentle, professional and polite and the whole experience, if it had
not been for the food, it would have been absolutely splendid. But why go to
eat in a restaurant if not for the food?
Only the nice ambience and the kindness of the management do not make a good restaurant, the food does.
